| We derive the name ArtSQL from the SQL database management system. SQL was originally invented by Edgar F. Codd, and then popularized with his collaborater C.J. Date. Vendors such as IBM (DB2), Oracle, Sybase and then Microsoft with SQLServer (originally a Sybase knock-off) implemented the most excellent database design schema methodology to come along in decades. Since the time of Codd, no other database design has been able to supplant his ideas. He taught us ways of implementing our understanding of what we know about people, places, and things (relational entities), then to divide these up into attributes (implemented as relational database table columns. They are fundamental building blocks of the most critical part of a computerized information system.
